The world's most expensive number plates
2008 has been a year for new records in the marketplace or personalised number plates.
In the U.K. the numbers F1 and S1 sold for £440,000 and £397,500 respectively.
However these amounts are dwarfed by the sale of the registration number "1" in Abu Dhabi which brought an amazing bid of $14.3 million.
This beats the previous record, also held by Abu Dhabi which was $6.8 million for the number "5".
These tremendous amounts were achieved before the current economic downturn really took hold, it is unlikely these records will be broken in 2009.

Due to the unique nature of private number plates, for example "car registrations are not items of property in their own right. They are assigned, and may be withdrawn by the Secretary of State.
